Adding and removing VAT

To add VAT, multiply the net price by the rate and add it: $100 at 20% becomes $120. To remove VAT from a VAT-inclusive price, divide by (1 + rate): $120 back at 20% divides to exactly $100, because the gross contains VAT charged on the smaller base. Dividing rather than subtracting is the step people most often get wrong.

Choosing the right rate

VAT rates differ by country and often by product: standard, reduced, and zero rates coexist in most VAT systems, and goods bought across borders may follow special rules. Confirm the rate that applies to your item or invoice line before relying on the result.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I work out the VAT from a receipt total?

Use the "Remove VAT" tab. Enter the VAT-inclusive total and the rate; the calculator splits it into the net price and the VAT portion.

Can I use this for GST or sales tax?

Yes. The arithmetic is identical for any flat percentage tax — enter your GST or sales-tax rate in place of the VAT rate.
