How hexadecimal arithmetic works
Hexadecimal uses sixteen digits, 0–9 then A–F for ten through fifteen, and each place is worth sixteen times the one to its right. That makes FF one less than 100, or 255 in decimal — a favorite corner of memory addressing. The calculator converts both inputs to exact whole numbers, runs the operation, and reports the result in hex plus binary and decimal so conversions come free.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do memory sizes use hex?
Hex packs four binary digits into one character, so a byte like 11111111 becomes simply FF. Programmers use it as a compact, human-readable view of raw binary values.
Can I enter negative numbers?
Enter non-negative whole numbers here; subtracting a larger first number gives a negative result shown with a minus sign in every base.
