Density is mass packed into volume

The defining relation is ρ = m/V: density equals mass divided by volume. Rearranged, it also gives m = ρV and V = m/ρ, which is why any two of the three values fully determine the third. This calculator keeps grams, cubic centimeters, and g/cm³ as its base units and converts everything else — kilograms, pounds, liters, cubic meters, kg/m³, and lb/ft³ — behind the scenes.

Using density to identify or compare materials

Density is a fingerprint: most woods float below 1 g/cm³, water sits at about 1, aluminum near 2.7, iron about 7.9, and gold a hefty 19.3. Objects less dense than a surrounding fluid float; denser ones sink. That single comparison answers questions from "will this raft hold me?" to "is this coin real?" — measure mass on a scale, volume by water displacement, and divide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure the volume of an irregular object?

Use displacement: partially fill a graduated cylinder with water, note the level, submerge the object fully, and note the new level. The difference in milliliters is the object’s volume in cubic centimeters.

Which units does the result prefer?

The main answer follows whatever you asked the calculator to solve for, expressed in g/cm³, grams, or cubic centimeters. The rows beneath translate that answer into kg/m³, liters, and pounds so you rarely need a second conversion tool.
